This is Book 1 of the Honeycake book series, designed to entertain and educate little kids. The grandmother – who in character and as the illustrated figure is Medea Kalantar herself – teaches her granddaughter, Nala, about her multicultural background while showing her how to bake a delicious honey cake.

As Nala learns from her grandma, each ingredient from some different part of the world represents a different family member of the multicultural family - “A Family of Spices”. The recipe is delicious because of its wonderful ingredients and the generous mix of love; the granddaughter – one of Kalantar’s “Honeycakes” – thus learns how to bake a honey cake and why she is one.

Not only for a kid from a multicultural background but also for any other kid, Honeycake: A Family of Spices carries an essential lesson.  It is a lesson in diversity, inclusion, acceptance, appreciation. Needless to say, delivering such a lesson to a kid is vital as it helps foster the right mindset from an early age, and develop bonds the right way with the belief that everyone is equal and everyone is special in his or her uniqueness. The baking tactic is a creative way of explaining that is sure to a help a child grasp and retain the intended lesson with considerable ease, particularly since there are illustrations alongside.

The illustrations are colourful. Since the illustrated grandmother is Kalantar herself, the entire family, it seems, must be illustrated here! 😊 The background’s a pretty hue too!

For adults, it can be a fun way of teaching. And who doesn’t love that warm feeling, whatever one’s age, of learning to cook or bake something under the guidance of one’s grandmother or from one of her recipes if she’s not around?

Recommended!

P.S. Go grab a copy for your kid and I’ll go try out the honey cake recipe given at the end. 😋
