Dr. George Ampat, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at
present, has happily created this useful self-help health resource for people
aged 50 and above who suffer from musculoskeletal pains. Despite years of
experience of performing surgery, Dr. Ampat explains in Free from Pain –
Exercise Book the importance of avoiding surgery, whenever possible.
As a good self-help tool should be, the book is easy
to grasp. Both the explanations bit and the instructions on performing the recommended
exercises for alleviating pains in bones and joints primarily are clearly and
crisply given, making these explanations and instructions quicker to
assimilate. The illustrations explaining the necessity of exercise and enlivening
the metaphors that go with the explanations, plus the illustrations depicting
the way the various exercises are to be performed greatly enhance the lucidity,
readability, and reader-orientedness of the content.
Free from Pain – Exercise Book answers
many important questions that people embarking on a journey of improving or
regaining their mobility and balance would have in their minds. For instance,
the book explains what to consider before starting an exercise regime, where to
exercise, how much to exercise, what to wear while exercising, when to eat
before exercising, and other such stuff.
The 12-week “free from pain” functional rehabilitation
programme that this book recommends is a fusion of three established exercise
programmes. Dr. Ampat provides 12 reasons and 12 metaphors that go with them to
show why exercise is important. For mobility, longevity, pain reduction, disease
prevention, mental well-being, stress reduction, etc. exercise is needed and
through metaphors that are stories with lessons, the ideas are effectively
conveyed. To take an example, the “Moral of the Story” for Metaphor 1 is “Be
fit and only then lift.” (p.7)
With suitable motivation provided through reasons and
metaphors, the book progresses on to explain the exercises to be taken up. This
book also has some additional useful content such as the SARC-F questionnaire -
a screening test for sarcopaenia, a test for determining signs of dementia, and
an Exercise Diary for 12 weeks.
People over the age of 50, those nearing 50, or even
younger people can take inspiration from this book to adopt a healthier
lifestyle and focus on keeping the body active so that the functioning of the
body is not negatively impacted. But reading and understanding this book will be
insufficient and of no real use if what is suggested isn’t implemented; as is
pointed out in the book, taking ownership and including exercise in one’s
routine is essential. If the reader does take this ownership, then the book
will certainly bring a wonderful change in that reader’s life and fulfil its
objective of being a useful self-help tool.
Do read and do exercise! And do ask your parents and
other elders to do so too!
