Dreamy Days and Random Naps is a book fit to be bought for kids whose parents or other elders narrate stories to them to stoke their imagination and curiosity or to encourage their dreams. Kids who have just started reading also might find in it new words and ideas to test and digest. Older readers, unless they adore cutesy pictures, are not too likely to find this book engaging.
But for those for whom Dreamy Days and Random Naps is a fit, it can prove to be a treat. The top winning aspect of the book is the pictures. Mawson, who is the protagonist bear, and his teddy bear friends are cute, and so are the items arranged around these teddy bears. The bears and other items lend aesthetic value, and are, in each picture, positioned to add meaning and relevance to the idea or dialogue written alongside.
Dreamy Days and Random Naps, as the title indicates, discusses dreams that are myriad in what they are composed of and discusses napping as a necessary as well as a fun activity. Napping takes one into the colourful world of dreams, and for “a Holiday from Bothers”; of course, the destination for the holiday could be different each time, for as the book says, “Don’t take all your Naps in one basket.”
While the dreams of Scottie are composed of aspirations of accomplishing brave deeds and achieving brave improvisations, the Seekers bravely set out to discover and unravel exciting things. The Professors aim to leave their mark through their interesting inventions for all of which they have “high hopes”. The Professors’ Wish-Back-Lamp, for those who wish their wish back, is something children are likely to enjoy wondering about or imagining stories about, possibly with themselves fitted into those stories.
Samantha, fascinated with stuff of beauty, thinks of the world in quite musical and happy modes. Engaging expressions are employed to convey Samantha’s musings; for instance, she says of some piece of music that she felt she could hear, “It was like the colours of the wind singing sadly. Or like the sighing of forgotten names still longing to be heard.” Samantha’s wishes for what might be are the sort children will like and perhaps wish for themselves, such as her wish for a tiny dragon as a new friend.
Adorably, these teddies make their own style statements, even while napping as napping is a holiday! Mawson’s teddy bear earmuffs are certainly fit for borrowing. Plus, these bears all have their own wonderful ideas to convey. Dreamy Days and Random Naps tells kids how every day is grand and every dream a treasure, how to be hopeful and look for beauty everywhere, and how to best take naps. As mentioned before, the pictures are the major delight here.
Recommended for little munchkins!
